Prime Television Picks: Seven Can't-Miss Movies This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the oppressive nature of female beauty and the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, an aging actress forced into presenting a workout series on the small screen. Pushed out due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome process called this experimental method. This creates a younger clone called Sue, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit mystery features Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from covering global conflict to embark on a high-end voyage alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her partner, as well as other extremely wealthy passengers. However when an enigmatic female goes overboard overnight and everyone claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries with this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical film star playing himself who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective even without a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple kidnappings has rendered the youth anxious. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and held captive in a basement, he fears a fatal end. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals commence capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, however Chastain achieves to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as sharp similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to identify a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are masters of calm composure, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
