Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
